“I found out about Tin Poppy through someone I follow on Instagram, and when I found myself planning a "micro" wedding it was the first place I thought of! I inquired about 18 months ahead, and Maggie helped me choose the right package for my group size and preferences. I found Cahoots (Spencer) for catering which ended up being SO good. He had catered there before so was familiar with the setup and we created a custom menu which was what we wanted. I also rented dishes and cutlery from him so that we cut down on what dishes we had to do! I decided to bring my own officiant and photographer - but those are usually included in the package. All the decor was beautiful, and the florals were rustic and fit the venue. The ceremony site was decorated simply but perfectly. The cake was gluten-free and also very delish - multiple people said it was the best dinner/cake they had at a wedding. Our coordinator put everything together behind the scenes and I didn't feel the need to micromanage one bit! We had a couple of small hiccups (table stability and running out of solar power) but both were dealt with promptly by the owner and coordinator. I honestly wouldn't change a thing. Fun facts
How did the venue become a wedding venue?
The first wedding at Tin Poppy Retreat was our own in 2011. Friends and family from far and wide gathered at our family property; little red hearts hanging in the trees lead our guests up to the viewpoint where we said our I dos, followed by a roast lamb, cheesecake, dancing and late night/early morning guitar singalongs under the stars by the crackling campfire. In 2015 when we built Tin Poppy Cabin, a purpose-built short-term rental dwelling, we started hosting elopements. In 2017 we bought the neighboring family cabins, and we expanded to host micro weddings, small footprint meaningful celebrations that blended elements of a traditional wedding in a unique and natural setting, inspired by our own 2011 wedding. What is your favorite part about a wedding?
I love providing a natural space for the couples and their friends and family, often meeting for the first time, to gather and get to know each other. Our 160-acre property has over 14 km of walking trails and our cabins are private, and self contained. Other highlights include reading the guestbook after a celebration, and witnessing the couple's elopements, they’re intimate, profound and have this beautiful intensity to them, a truly magical start to a new chapter.
