“I had not daydreamed about being proposed to. In fact, I actively avoided thinking about it. Jules, my partner of seven years, loved to tease me about how impossible I was to surprise. And although we had talked about ‘someday’ – I knew it was important to him that I didn’t see a proposal coming. So when we were on a backcountry trek in Grand Waimea Canyon in Kauai, I didn’t pay much attention to his uncharacteristic concern about finding the perfect place to camp. I didn’t think about what clothes I put on after we rinsed the long day of hiking off in the river and set up camp. And when he called me over to the water’s edge, it didn’t occur to me to untuck my pants from my socks or remove the mosquito net from my face. But the moment he turned to look at me and took both of my hands in his, I knew. Nerves, excitement, and seriousness were all over his face. He told me he had been carrying a ring around for months waiting for the ‘perfect’ moment. He said he realized it was not about a perfect moment: spending our lives together was about all the in-betweens. He continued on in a speech (which he maintains that he blacked out) before fumbling with his pocket and pulling out ring box he’d wrapped in a T-shirt so I didn’t notice the shape. And he got down on one knee. It was, in fact, perfect.”
