Sentimental Summer Wedding at Devil’s Thumb Ranch

May 16, 2024 BY: Amy

“We honored my Japanese heritage with the traditional 1000 cranes, which represent lifelong happiness and a prosperous marriage. The 1000 cranes were folded and strung by my mom and grandma and we displayed the cranes on the Pergola during cocktail hour. My dad passed away 16 years ago, and he was from Hawaii, so we honored him by saving him a seat with one of his old Aloha shirts, my brother wore his wedding ring down the aisle, and my brother, mom, and I danced to ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ for the traditional father-daughter dance. It also started drizzling during our vows and as we had our first kiss, the sun came out through the rain clouds (and directly into our eyes), and our guitarist, Stephan Hume, started playing our recessional song ‘Here Comes the Sun’- it felt like my dad, and all of our loved ones who had passed, were with us at that moment. For our welcome dinner, our florist, Erin Hornstein from Plum Sage Flowers, had the idea to use potted ferns for our table decor, which was a super sustainable and unique idea. Not only were they in the cutest mix and match pots, but I loved that we didn’t have single-use flowers on Friday, plus it really allowed our wedding reception florals to shine on Saturday! Andrew and I were looking for a mountain venue that had ample accommodations, a plethora of activities for our guests, amazing food, and could host all of our weekend events. Although we’re both native Californians, since most of Andrew’s family is in the Midwest and East Coast, we knew getting married in Colorado would be the perfect spot in the middle for everyone to gather. Upon our first visit, we immediately knew that Devil’s Thumb Ranch would be the perfect location for our wedding weekend – Devil’s Thumb is breathtaking from every angle and we knew our family and friends would have a blast there! Andrew was also pretty excited when he learned they had a river for fly fishing on site. We also knew the venue would be the perfect place to come back on our anniversaries and with our future children for more exploration and adventures! I had a lot of fun dreaming up my outfits for the wedding weekend. The all star was my wedding dress which had a really subtle but beautiful embroidery on a silk faille gown, by Carolina Herrera. To compliment my dress, I wore a pair of white Manolo Blahnik Hangisli pumps, which were surprisingly comfortable. For dancing and the after party, I changed into a lighter Galvan London dress and low Manolos, which I was so thankful I had because it got so hot out on the dance floor! For our welcome dinner I wore La Pointe sequin pants and cashmere tank, with a Lingua Franca sweater embroidered with my new initials and our wedding date. I also got a cute silver Chanel bag to accompany me throughout the weekend, which I purchased with three of my best girlfriends that I’ve known since childhood. For jewelry, I focused on sentimental pieces. On my wedding day, I wore my mom’s diamond tennis bracelet for my ‘something borrowed’, a delicate pearl bracelet that my mother-in-law gifted to me for the wedding, and diamond and sapphire earrings (my ‘something blue’) that I got with Andrew, my mom, and my brother in India right before the pandemic. We really wanted to focus our wedding weekend on our guests. Given this was the first time many of our family and friends were seeing each other since the pandemic, we wanted it to feel like a big reunion for everyone. From the decor to my outfits to the overall feel, we wanted the vibe to be rustic mountain meets simple and understated elegance. We envisioned a mountain weekend getaway for our guests as we love the mountains and spent time living at Andrew’s family cabin in Northern California during the pandemic.”
