From their first date at a Rockies game to their first anniversary spent traipsing around Croatia, Greece, and Egypt, they knew they found something truly special. On a trip celebrating Garrett’s 30th birthday, he surprised Santana by getting down on one knee and proposing. Saying yes felt like the easiest thing she would do in her lifetime. As they began planning a wedding, one problem emerged. Garrett is from northeastern Colorado. Santana is from southern New Mexico. Where would they get married? Determined to convince Garrett that the Land of Enchantment is the clear winner, Santana planned a road trip through New Mexico, making sure they stopped at all the major attractions. They stopped in Taos and meandered through an Earthship. They spent a week in Santa Fe walking through every shop and restaurant in the Plaza. They hit up (the original) Meow Wolf. They woke up before the sun to catch all of the balloons taking off at the famous Hot Air Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque. Finally, they arrived in Santana’s hometown of Las Cruces where Garrett got the hiccups in every restaurant they ate at because of the spiciness of all the food. And that’s what hooked him. How can you not love sweating while eating? So NM won as their wedding location and the minute they passed by El Rey Court, they knew they had to have their engagement photos taken there. P.S. It’s rare to see the couple without a drink in their hands, so stopping inside the bar for a few photos was a must. And what’s a celebration without bubbles? Santana insisted on bringing a bottle of New Mexico’s best sparkling wine – Gruet.”
