Congrats darling! You're engaged!
From the moment you said "yes" to the man of your dreams, the journey of planning one of the most exciting days in your life begins. But, even if you've been creating an elaborate Pinterest board for years leading up to this exact moment, it doesn't mean you should plan your big day all on your own!
One of the first decisions you will encounter when planning your wedding is whether or not you should hire a wedding planner. So, we asked the experts for you!
Three of our Gem Collective wedding planners have provided some insight on why hiring a wedding planner is a good idea.
Why hire a wedding planner?
"Wedding planners are a great resource to have on your side as a bride or groom planning a wedding as planners work to bring bold and unique ideas to life that align with the vision for your big day. Your wedding planner can source wicked vendors that suit your one-of-a-kind style and fall within your budget." - Emma McCormick
Wedding planners are also your biggest advocate. It's easy to get cloudy vision during the planning process with opinions coming from your bridesmaids, family and more. Remember, this is your day and the wedding planner is here to support you.
"From the moment you hire a wedding planner, he or she becomes your biggest advocate and is able to provide unbiased support and insight throughout each phase of the planning process. While your friends and family may have their own expectations for you and will want to influence your decisions, your wedding planner can see from a clear lens and truly step in to support you when you may need it most. Their job is to highlight all your wants, wishes and needs and bring YOUR vision to life!"- Jenna Chacon, Revel & Roots Events
Is it worth the cost?
Weddings are expensive! We get it. In fact, couples spend an average of $33,000 on their big day. And, the average cost of a day-of-coordinator is $1,500 compared to $1,500-$10,000 for a full-service planner.
So why spend money on something you can plan yourself?
"Wedding planners have strong vendor connections and work efficiently and effectively to ensure your must-haves are included in your wedding day. Wedding planners will often also be able to pass on discounts that they receive from preferred vendors that they work with frequently. Clients often tell us after the wedding that hiring our team was invaluable!
A wedding planner is an essential investment for your wedding because they have the ability to tick all of your must-haves by getting creative with your budget. They know which elements will have the largest impact on the guests’ experience, and they can advise you on which aspects of your wedding can be DIY'd with assistance from friends and family and which services should be handled by external vendors." - Emma McCormick
The venue has a coordinator. Do I still need a wedding planner?
If you already have your dream venue picked out and it includes a day-of-coordinator, wedding planner Emma McCormick explains why you may still want to hire a full-service wedding planner.
"Definitely, yes. We get asked this question often and our response is always, yes. The venue coordinator’s job is first and foremost to be a representative of the venue, while a wedding planner works exclusively as an advocate for you, with your best interests in mind. The venue’s coordinator will already have in their repertoire how to design and execute a wedding in the space, however, a wedding planner will provide a collection of creative and original ideas for how you can transform the venue into something completely customized and unique for you. Most importantly, your wedding planner will be motivated to ensure that all the little details to create your memorable day are handled with care, as their brand is attached to your wedding and their company’s reputation is on the line." - Emma McCormick
However, not all venues come with this perk. And, while having a day-of-coordinator may not seem necessary at first, enlisting your family and friends is a big task and may make the day a little less enjoyable for them. If your venue doesn't come with a day-of-coordinator, Payton from Promise Event Planners explains why hiring a wedding planner in this scenario is a definite yes.
"It is our job as your day of coordinator to set up all of your personal items and decor. These personal touches are so important and make your wedding what it is! We do this so your family and friends can enjoy the day and not have to worry about setting things up for you. At the end of the night, we pack everything up and put it safely into your car or hotel suite. You have been partying the whole night and the last thing you want to be doing is cleaning up. A planner is a gift you give yourself on your wedding day so treat yo'self!" - Payton, Promise Event Planners
We know the vendors!
Wedding planners don't just know how to throw a good party, they also have industry connections. According to Jenna, founder of Revel and Roots, "Our network of relationships is constantly growing! The connections and relationships we have access to are more valuable than you may think. Wedding planners are able to connect you with vendors that best fit your personality, style, and budget as well as those hidden gem vendors that you may never have come across on your own. Not to mention all the time wedding planners save you from researching venues & vendors on your own to find that perfect fit for your wedding. Bonus: Wedding planners often have access to vendor perks & discounts, which they can pass off to their clients!"
We'll be the main point of contact!
Still not convinced? Imagine this: it's your big day and you're enjoying a glass of champagne while getting dolled up with your best girlfriends. But, the caterer keeps calling with last minute questions and changes. Sounds like the perfect way to ruin your day or even cause a delay.
"As the bride, you do not want to be the main point of contact on the day of your wedding. We keep in contact with all of your vendors at all times, probably more than we need to, to make sure that things are going well and according to schedule. Instead of calling you, the vendors will call us to ask for help or guidance. We want you to sit back, relax, and have a mimosa. Not taking calls from rental companies!" - Payton, Promise Event Planners
Don't worry, be happy!
Planning all the details leading up to your big day may seem like a breeze, but the number one reason to hire a wedding planner is to keep stress at bay *before and during the wedding.* Wedding planners' sole purpose is to keep the bride and groom to be happy!
"We are here to answer the tough questions! If you wake up at three in the morning freaking out about any aspect of the biggest day of your life, shoot us a text, email, or give us a call and we will do our very best to put you at ease. When in doubt, call your planner!
At your wedding, we will act as your personal assistant (and BFF) to make sure all your needs are met. This way you, your family, and your closest friends can feel like true guests at your wedding! We want you to enjoy the day and not sweat the small stuff!" - Payton, Promise Event Planners
