Love Story

“I’d like to say that our love story started when I was 12 years old – the first time I saw the older boy who shares my first name. We grew up in neighboring towns and I would see him at sporting events and the county fair. He was in high school, and I was definitely at the still wearing braces, awkward in my own skin age. But that didn’t stop me from developing a major crush and telling my parents that he was in fact, my future husband, which ultimately became his nickname for the remainder of my school-age years. Fast forward 10 years, I was 22 and had just moved back to Colorado after finishing my bachelor’s degree in Texas. A mutual friend invited me to a “Friendsgiving” celebration and I saw my old future husband there. We had gone on a couple dates the summer after my freshman year in college and although we seemed to really like each other, the timing was terrible. I still had three years of school left, 600 miles away. He was done with college, had a “real job” and seemed to know something I didn’t yet. I needed the opportunity to experience all the things he already had. So there we were, at a Friendsgiving party thrown as a cover to get the two of us together to see if there really could be something between the boy and girl with the same name. And for the first time, neither age nor timing seemed to be in the way. Before we knew it, a year had passed, and we were driving to what I thought was supposed to be my birthday dinner. Instead, we ended up at a deserted apple orchard with a beautiful lit up gazebo in the center. My future husband dropped to one knee and asked me to be his future wife. To date, it was the most beautiful experience of my life. I think back to twelve-year-old me randomly announcing to my parents that he was my future husband and I am in disbelief that he actually is. Was it fate, coincidence, luck? I’ll never know, but I can’t wait to someday tell this story to our children and see what they think the answer is.”
