Zabeth and I have been together for almost 5 years and we first met on the Denver Broncos football field while volunteering for a local NFL Play60/Boys & Girls Club Event. I was a Denver Broncos Cheerleader at the time and she was running the event on behalf of the non-profit organization, Playworks.
Over time, I quickly became involved with Playworks and we began to work together. There was an instant connection, butterflies flying and we could not deny the secret attraction that was building between us. We fell in love FAST, started dating and moved in together all within 4 months time.
The first 3 years of our relationship were without a doubt magical, yet one of the most challenging times I have ever experienced – simply because LGBT couples do not receive the same love & acceptance as hetero-couples do. We were questioned, doubted, judged and have had to fight for our love every single day. Nonetheless, our love grew and was full of passion, even more so today than ever before. We got engaged May 2016 and married in Cabo San Lucas on May 28th, 2017 (with my family there).
Our engagement was raw and real, I like to call it my “Sweet Home Alabama” moment. She took me ring shopping and when I found the most perfect rose gold engagement set, she told me she was not leaving the store without making this purchase. She looked me in the eye and asked if I still wanted to marry her. Before I could even answer, my body was flooded with emotions and the tears were starting to fall. We almost had an opposite reaction to what the other would be expected to have… She was confident, calm and collected and I was shocked and overwhelmed with tears. I, of course, said yes and we made the purchase together! We kept it our little secret for about a week and celebrated (just us two) with an adventurous day trip to hike Hanging Lake, followed by a romantic dinner date in Denver!
