Proposal Story

I was visiting home in Albuquerque, NM from college for my fall break. Jake, with a lot help from my mom, made arrangements for us to fly in the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta on special shapes day. Neither of us had ever flown in a hot air balloon, so naturally, I was utterly terrified.  We arrived at the Balloon Fiesta Park before the sun crested the Sandias, giving us time peruse the festival, watch the balloons inflate, spit an obligatory green chile breakfast burrito,  and to buy hand warmers (some of which I actually put in my shoes because it was freezing). As soon as the sun peaked over the mountains, the mass accession of special shapes began. When it was time for our balloon to inflate and take off, our pilot said it was too windy for him to fly. Because we weren't on a commercial flight, he had no reason to risk flying in less-than-desirable weather conditions. I was obviously disappointed upon hearing the news, and I was completely unaware of the ring sitting in Jake's pocket, you can imagine how disheartened he was. But, just as we were about to leave, the pilot said the wind died down just enough for us to go up for a short ride. Before we knew it, we were in the basket of our balloon, slowly lifting off the ground. The views of the Bosque and the Rio Grande River in autumn are absolutely stunning, and from 2,000 feet up in the air, they are even more breathtaking. We were just taking it all in, when all of the sudden, Jake started crouching down in the basket of the balloon. My first thought was he was crazy for trying to sit on the ground in a tiny basket, thousands of feet in the air. It wasn't until he pulled out my beautiful ring that I realized what was actually happening. I will never forget the words he said to me and the way he looked at me. When I said "yes", the pilots of the balloon threw confetti in the air, which was extremely cheesy, but also somehow extremely perfect, I loved it. Once we made it back to the lift site, we were greeted by the balloon crew, my mom, and of course,  more confetti. Getting engaged up in the balloon was such an intimate and memorable experience, and I'm just glad he didn't drop the ring!
