The House of S&M is a luxury catering and private dining company based in Kalispell, Montana, serving weddings and destination events throughout Whitefish, Glacier, Bigfork, Kalispell, and the Flathead Valley.
Led by Chef Star Ironside, a Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef with more than 25 years of culinary experience, The House of S&M creates indulgent, atmospheric menus designed to feel as memorable as the celebration itself. From candlelit grazing tables and refined buffets to intimate private dinners and elevated wedding menus, every offering is crafted with thoughtful hospitality, bold flavor, and cinematic presentation.
Sustainability is also central to our work. We use compostable service ware when appropriate, donate edible leftovers when possible, and operate a closed-loop food waste system through Mill and our 4-H chickens, creating a hospitality experience that is both luxurious and intentional.

“The House of S&M catered our daughter's wedding this week with around 230 guests. The Chef, Star, was wonderful to work with!
We initially met her at the My Montana Wedding fair back in January at the Flathead County Fairgrounds. She was incredibly friendly & after chatting for a while we knew her catering services were what we wanted. Communication with Star was very easy & she always answered questions in a timely manner.
The set-up of the food was great. She came fully prepared for our needs & laid out a beautiful buffet. She returned after dinner & provided cleanup & packing of leftovers as well. It was so helpful & allowed us to just focus on being with our guests & enjoying our evening.
The Burrito Bar was a hit on a warm summer night. Everyone loved the food & all the options she provided. Being the parents of the bride, we spent most of dinner greeting guests so we didn't eat until most of the guests were done & some were going for seconds. She provided enough food & we were still able to have a great dinner after all the guests had already eaten.

What do you consider your style to be?
Our style is best described as dark luxury meets old-world hospitality. We love food that feels abundant, elegant, moody, and memorable without being fussy. Think candlelight, gold accents, layered textures, generous hospitality, and menus that feel curated for the couple rather than copied from a template.
What are your favorite kinds of couples to work with?
We love couples who care deeply about the guest experience. Whether they are planning an intimate mountain dinner or a full wedding celebration, our favorite couples are the ones who want their food to feel personal, generous, and unforgettable. We especially enjoy working with clients who are open to creative menus, bold flavors, and thoughtful presentation.
Where do you find your design inspiration?
I have always been deeply inspired by art, especially timeless still life paintings and the great museums of the world. Before food became my primary medium, I was a painter and had several art exhibits when I was younger. I loved painting still life scenes filled with fruit, texture, shadow, and abundance. There was always something about those paintings that made me want to reach through the canvas, pick up the apple, and taste it. In many ways, my work as a chef is an extension of that same impulse. I traded paint for edible medium and began creating compositions guests could actually experience. My inspiration comes from classical artwork, museum halls, old-world tables, dramatic light, beautiful ingredients, and the idea that food can be both visual and deeply sensory. A table should feel composed, abundant, and alive.
What is your favorite part about a wedding?
The moment guests realize the meal is not just a formality, but part of the memory. Food has a way of anchoring the evening. It becomes the thing people talk about later, the warmth between speeches, the shared table after the ceremony, the little indulgence that makes the night feel complete.
