Wedding Tales: The Crazy Photographer

By Imthiaz Houseman

I looked around and wondered what the shrieking noise was. It was hurting my ears it was so loud. I looked down and it was me. My face was red and I was yelling. As I looked down at myself I wondered if I had died. What’s going on? I kept thinking. Why am I looking down at myself? Have I completely lost it?
That day I did lose it. I had lost my cool, my integrity, and my confidence. The one person you aren’t supposed to yell at is the bride. I was yelling so loud people started to come into the bride’s room to see what was going on. She was almost in tears. She couldn’t say anything she just stared at me with a blank look on her face.
“What do you mean you don’t care,” I said. “We have a life too and if you don’t care about your wedding photography then why are we here?”
The mother of the bride pushed her way through the door and grabbed me by the arm. She pulled me outside so nobody could hear us talk. As her husband followed quickly behind she stopped him and told him to go check on their daughter. I looked at him and he was beet red. I was glad she sent him inside he had already gone off on the caterer just an hour before; I couldn’t imagine what he would say to me.
“Imthiaz, what happened in there?” she asked.
I’m so sorry I don’t know what to say. It was completely inappropriate and I have never lost my cool like that before. Right now words can’t express how sorry I am to you and your family.
This is my daughter’s wedding day, why would you think it was okay to yell at her on her wedding day?
She was right. How could I think it was okay to yell at the bride on her wedding day? I began to tell her what happened. We were in the bride’s room by ourselves we had were chatting about her morning run while she finished her make-up. And that’s when it happened. She got a smudge on her eye from the eye liner. It was small, but it was on her eye shadow and she started to freak out. She was nervous and that was the only reason why I even said something.
Carrie. To be honest that smudge is so small you won’t even see it in your pictures. Don’t worry about it, no one will even notice.
She turned to me wondering why I was even speaking. “Imthiaz, I’ll be honest. I don’t even care about my pictures.” At this point I was sobbing to Carrie’s mother. Maybe she would have mercy on me now that she sees that I’m crying.
What are you talking about Carrie? What do you mean you don’t care, we have a life too and if you don’t care about your wedding photography then why are we here?
I just told you. I don’t care about you being here today. She said rolling her eyes.
At this point I’m pissed at Carrie. “I understand you may not care right now, but you may care about your photos 20 years from now.”
I was so frustrated that I couldn’t shut up I just kept going. But I was telling the truth, why did she want us there if she didn’t care? Carrie’s mom took a deep breath. She said we needed to get back in there and we would deal with this after the wedding. “Please don’t say anything else to Carrie or anyone else for that matter… Just do your job,” she said. And she walked off leaving me outside alone.
As the reception started Carrie made her way over to me. She had 3 shot glasses in her hands. At that point I thought about running off, but I knew that I needed to say something to her. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. When I opened my eyes she was standing right in front of me. She smiled and didn’t say anything. I smiled back but nothing would come out of my mouth. And then finally I found the words.
I’m sorry…
Do you hate me? Carrie asked.
No, I don’t hate you. I just didn’t want you ruining your wedding day. But, I never should have said anything it wasn’t my place.
She started to laugh and handed me the shoot glass. “Here… Take this. Thank you for saying something. That’s just what I needed today.” We laughed, took the shoot, and then hugged each other.
I am a wedding photographer. Everyone thinks it is one of the most glamorous jobs. As a photographer we have seen, heard, and very well may have done it all. Introducing Wedding Tales…
