Wedding Planner Myth Busters

Wedding Planner Myth Busters

By Maya Barr, Bridal Consultant with Rocky Mountain Bridal Consultants

MYTH:
I can’t afford to hire a coordinator.
Wedding planners are your best asset to finding deals in the area where you are getting married and better yet, not familiar with. They have relationships with the vendors that you cannot replicate from a distance. A planner’s job is to help you stay on a budget and suggest money saving alternatives. Their fees will be totally, or nearly, eliminated by the savings they offer.

MYTH:
My officiant/caterer/photographer/on-site coordinator is my wedding planner.
A vendor’s job is to provide a specific service. You’re on-site coordinator will not be sewing your dress if it rips, nor will your officiant know what to do if your band is late. The service of making sure everything runs smoothly so that you can enjoy your day is the job of your wedding planner.

MYTH:
My mom/maid-of-honor/sister-in-law live in the vicinity of the wedding, I don’t need a planner.
Your friends and family can be very helpful in planning a wedding from near or far. However, they are invited guests. They should be allowed to enjoy themselves to prevent resentment at this joyful occasion.

MYTH:
My wedding is too small to enlist the help of a coordinator.
Weddings require a lot of coordination when your guests and/or you are traveling great distances. Small, intimate gatherings can be a vacation for everyone. There are just as many details, just on a smaller scale. In fact with a smaller guest list you may be able to have more elaborate details and more events associated with the wedding.

MYTH:
I’ve already hired vendors; there is nothing more for a wedding planner to do.
The weeks leading up to your wedding often entail the most work. As a destination bride, it is not desirable, nor expected of you to drop the rest of you obligations to be negotiating and figuring out last minute details. A coordinator can take care of the details for you. In addition, the wedding day requires the most amount of coordination between the wedding party and vendors. A wedding coordinator will keep everyone and everything on track and take care of the glitches so you can enjoy your first hours as husband and wife.
